Google wants to help people distance themselves socially with a Maps feature that allows users to check how crowded local public transport is near them.

The tool uses artificial intelligence, historical location trends and information crowdsourced from Google Map users to predict how busy public transport will be. Overcrowding predictions will be available to more than 10,000 carriers in 100 countries.

With the help of local transport companies in New York and Sydney, Google is currently testing a feature that will allow users to see how full each transit vehicle is.

“It is no surprise that passenger numbers in transit plummeted in the early days of the pandemic. As people return to public transit – in the US, driving directions on maps are up 50% compared to last year – safety remains number one. That’s why we’re expanding Overcrowding forecasts for over 10,000 transport companies in 100 countries so you know if your line is likely to have a lot of vacancies, full capacity, or somewhere in between, ”said Eric Tholomé, Director of Product, Google Maps in a blog post. in which the new function is announced.

While the feature continues to rage during the coronavirus pandemic, Google said the feature can still help people avoid overcrowded trains and buses after the pandemic.

Google adds another feature that allows users to see their transportation trends over time.
